“In Hungary, we grew up with a generational anxiety about how a man can't connect to the world through his emotions, and I want to change this. While I celebrate the skin, body, friendship, trust, and life in general—with all its ups and downs—‘There is a Big River, in Which There is a Big Island, in Which There is a Lake, in Which There is an Island, in Which There is a Small House, Where a Life is Growing in a Womb’ is my first step toward articulating how I believe we are connected.”

There is a Big River, in Which There is a Big Island, in Which There is a Lake, in Which There is an Island, in Which There is a Small House, Where a Life is Growing in a Womb

The photographs in ‘There is a Big River…’ by András Ladocsi focus on the relationship between the subject and their environment. An exuberant cast of diverse characters and body parts tumble throughout the book with bodies either entwined, contorted, balanced, cropped, or at repose and still, captured from unconventional angles.

“Through my work, I want to bring to light the intensity and resilience of the human spirit, captured in the moments where we are pushing our bodies and minds to reach our highest potential. Ultimately, my work is a celebration of life and the interconnectivity of our shared existence.”

András Ladocsi

For 14 years Ladocsi was a competitive swimmer—often training twice a day—and his heightened and intuitive understanding of physicality and movement have informed this work. The theme of water runs throughout the book acting as a metaphor for the interrelations between us all. Each figure is depicted confidently in an act of self-representation or self-expression, born out of Ladocsi’s interest in his subjects and their relationship with their body and self-image. For this reason, he mainly worked with friends and acquaintances, making the photographs over a period of 6-years in Australia, France, Hungary, the UK and the US. There is no formal narrative in the book—instead, it is a visual choreographed dance of emotion and form. Ladocsi’s observation of movement, both within and outside the frame, seem to capture the character’s activity or emotion at its peak in a sequence.
