Rófurass

All living beings are connected. Love is the glue of the world. ‘Rófurass’ is about the animal within us, that we try not to think about. Just as many mammals, we are also driven by smell. We do not talk about the mystery of ‘Rófurass’, we just show it. The mystery is embedded in this work. The dog within. The dogwoman.

“‘Rófurass’ has drawings, graphic prints, photographs of wild dogs from Lithuania, of pets and companions, and a woman with a dog inside her body wanting to get out. The better we get to know humans, she seems to say, the more we find ourselves loving dogs.”

Jonatan Habib Engqvist

Bjargey decided to return to her first subject of photography. Naughty sheepdogs, that would never sit still. She was 9 years old. She had a small camera with black and white film. The dogs were so naughty that all she got was bits and pieces: half-bodies, heads and tails and legs. Dogs running around. Still these images were amazing and she remains proud of these early photographs.

The book and the exhibition ‘Rófurass’ is the result of play and experimentation. All of a sudden, Bjargey had made images of dogs in photography, drawing, etchings, painting, and film frames.

Why dogs and not cats one might ask? Because Bjargey is allergic to cats.

Bjargey Ólafsdóttir

Bjargey Ólafsdóttir studied photography, painting and mixed media at Iceland Academy of the Arts and Academy of Fine Arts, Helsinki, and screenwriting and directing at Binger Filmlab, Amsterdam. She works with all media, resulting in works that often are ironic, sometimes violent or sinister, drawing on obsession and fantasies of contemporary life. Her characters are subjects lost in familiar yet alienating circumstances.
