The Workshop

“Literature is rich and photography is poor. What is interesting is that when you take something that is poor you have to invest in it to make it rich. While if something is rich, everything is done.” - Klavdij Sluban

Sluban develops a rigorous and coherent body of work, nourished by literature, never inspired by immediate and sensational events, making him one of the most interesting photographers of his generation. He questions the contemporary world throughout a specific photographic writing, dark yet poetic, working on long term projects in countries, islands, prisons, where time and space are condensed. The Balkans, the Black Sea, the Baltic Sea, former Yugoslavia, former Soviet Union, the Caribbean, Central America, the Antarctic, China, Japan... can be read as many successive steps of an in-depth interpretation of the encountered reality.

Participants will be chosen to spend 6 days working closely with Klavdij. Everyday sessions will be made of taking pictures individually, as well as editing together with Klavdij, either in individual or group meetings. This workshop in Athens will be their chance to develop an already existing body of work and push participants to make new responses to their personal project and identify their own unique visual language.

During the 6-day workshop students will alternate between taking photographs and discussing work, they will be attending an intense daily review and editing process.

The workshop is open up to a maximum of 15 participants, who will be selected through a combination of the merit of their portfolio and their personal statement.

Klavdij Sluban is aiming to work with young emerging photographers around the world, in order to support and encourage them we decided to offer a discount at the final price of the workshop for participants under 30 years old.

Athens, a chaotic city with vibrant art scene, can offer many alternatives to photographers, as it can turn out to be a very unpredictable place. For participants coming from abroad Athens gives the possibility to be used as a space to project themselves, and for Athens residents, it’s a chance to discover a new perception of the city.

For the last night of the workshop, a public projection of the works will be held at Void.
