Natasha Christia

Natasha Christia is an independent writer, curator and educator based in Barcelona. She is also a collection consultant and a dealer specialized in fine art photography and photobooks.

Her research focuses on the exploration and reinvention of dominant narratives through a novel reading of archival collections, the intersection of photography, film and the photobook, and the dialogue between 20th century avant-garde photography and contemporary forms of expression often labelled as post-photography. Her penchant for “excavating” the past owes much to her diverse multidisciplinary academic background in Art History, Film Studies and Publishing.

Void

Always looking for an experimental approach to its projects, Void is a project created in October ‘16, currently based in the heart of Athens. Focusing on alternative publishing, exhibitions and creative projects. We have published and worked with international and Greek artists.

 

The Workshop

Dates: 24 & 25 JUN ‘17

On the event of Valentina Abenavoli’s exhibition Amore (23/06 - 06/07), Void will host Still Moving / Moving Still, a two-day intensive theoretical seminar dedicated to a series of case studies that highlight the unique relationship and dialogue between photography and film.

The seminar will be run by Natasha Christia, curator of the show.

Though remote and distinct in the consciousness of many, photography and film will be examined here against a common background and context. Our aim will be try to grasp the intermediate state of the image that oscillates between stillness and movement and to break down the existent frontiers between the two media, reinforcing instead an interdisciplinary study – comparative and non-axiomatic at heart.

Still Moving / Moving Still will offer an insight on the history of the two media, including the presence of "kinetic" and "cinematographic" in the work of photographers such as Eadweard Muybridge, Paul Strand, László Moholy-Nagy, Jeff Wall, Victor Burgin and Eric Rondepierre, and of the "photographic" in the work of filmmakers in the field of commercial cinema and the experimental cinema of the avant-garde, such as Alain Resnais, Michelangelo Antonioni, Chris Marker, Jonas Mekas, Jean-Luc Godard, David Claerbout and Peter Hutton, to name just a few.

The aim of our weekend meeting will be

  • to reflect and debate on what supposedly involve photography and cinema,
  • to question the built-up definitions of time and movement, and,
  • to acquire full knowledge of the new creative possibilities that open up to a future in which the two media are closer than ever, implementing them to our creative practice.

During the sessions, images and fragments of well-known and lesser known films will be shown, alongside books and complementary material. The two evening sessions will be devoted to a series of specific screenings.

At the end of the seminar, participants will be provided with its full content along with the corresponding bibliography and filmography.

Individuals with a sharp mind and with the following characteristics are welcome to join this seminar:

  • students and professionals from the areas of photography and video who wish to develop a project or who are looking for alternative ways to approach their process,
  • individuals with a strong interest in the history and criticism of the two media,
  • all those who enjoy looking at photographs and watching movies (on any screen).

The investment for the 2-day workshop will be 70 and €55 for students

The workshop will take place with a minimum of 8 participants.

Selected participants will be expected to pay a non-refundable reservation deposit of half the fee up to 2 days after selected. The second instalment is expected to be paid the week prior to the workshop starts.
